Zendesk Competitors in 2026: Who Competes With Each Part of Zendesk

Zendesk's competitors grouped by the part of Zendesk they replace, with prices read off each vendor's own pricing page and a 10-agent cost comparison.

Zendesk's suite split into help desk, help center and live chat with competitor counts; $550 vs $309 a month for 10 agents

You can replace all of Zendesk, or only the part that costs you too much, and this guide shows who competes with each part and what they charge.

The short answer: Zendesk's main competitors as a full help desk are Freshdesk, Zoho Desk, Help Scout, Front, Gorgias, Intercom, HubSpot Service Hub, and Salesforce Service Cloud. If you only need the help center, look at Document360, Helpjuice, and HelpCenter.io. If you only need live chat, look at Tidio, Crisp, tawk.to, and HelpCenter.chat.

Every price below was read off the vendor's own pricing page on 28 September 2026. Two of the products in this guide are ours: we make HelpCenter.io (a help center) and HelpCenter.chat (live chat). They appear only in the sections where they fit, with their limits.

What are you actually buying from Zendesk?

Zendesk sells a suite. In its own words, the Zendesk Suite comes "equipped with ticketing, messaging, live chat, help center, and voice support". That is four or five products in one bill, priced "per agent, per month".

Which plan includes which piece matters more than the headline price:

Zendesk planPrice per agentWhat the plan includes
Support Team$19 a month billed yearly ($25 month to month)Email ticketing, routing, pre-written responses, automations. No knowledge base.
Suite Team$55 a month billed yearly ($69 month to month)Adds the Knowledge Base, messaging and live chat, and telephony

Suite Professional is $115 per agent a month billed yearly ($149 month to month). Source: zendesk.com/pricing, which shows the yearly prices by default.

The detail most teams miss is in the first two rows. The help center is not on Support Team, so the moment you want public help articles, every agent moves to a Suite seat. For 10 agents that is $550 a month billed yearly, or $690 month to month, and it includes chat and voice whether you use them or not.

AI is billed on top. Zendesk says its AI agents are "included in every Suite and Support plan, with pricing based on the successful outcomes they deliver", and explains that "you pay only for customer requests that were successfully resolved by the AI agent, without any escalation to a human agent."

So the useful question is not "what replaces Zendesk?" but "which piece do I want to replace?"

Full help desk replacements

These replace Zendesk's ticketing and usually its help center too. Each one is better than Zendesk at something, and each one gives something up.

Freshdesk

The closest like-for-like switch, and the cheapest way to keep a knowledge base inside your help desk. Growth is $19 per agent a month billed annually and already includes "Customer portal & knowledge base", plus "Freddy AI Agent (first 500 sessions included)". More AI sessions cost $49 per 100. Pro is $55 and Enterprise $89 per agent (pricing).

Where Zendesk is still stronger: its enterprise track record and app marketplace, which are why large teams stay. If you depend on a specific Zendesk integration, check that Freshdesk has it before moving.

Zoho Desk

The best free starting point for a small team. Zoho's page says "The Free edition gives you 3 users with limited capabilities", with email ticketing included (pricing). Paid plans are per user and shown in your local currency. It fits best if you already use Zoho CRM or Zoho's other apps.

Where Zendesk is still stronger: polish and depth in messaging and chat, and the size of its partner network.

Help Scout

The friendliest option for email-heavy SaaS support. Standard is $25 per user a month billed annually and includes live chat and SMS and "Multiple knowledge bases". Plus is $45 and Pro $75. A free plan covers 5 users, 1 inbox, and 1 Docs site. Its AI Answers add-on costs $0.75 per resolution (pricing).

Where Zendesk is still stronger: its Suite bundles voice support, and it is built for large, multi-brand teams. For a closer look, see HelpCenter.io vs Help Scout.

Front

For teams who live in shared email and want support to feel like an inbox. Starter is $25 per seat a month billed annually, capped at 10 seats, with "Shared inbox and ticketing" and a "No-code public knowledge base". Professional is $65 per seat for up to 50 seats (pricing).

Where Zendesk is still stronger: a fuller self-service help center and more channels out of the box. The 10-seat cap on Starter also means a growing team moves to $65 per seat sooner than it might expect.

Gorgias

Built for ecommerce stores, and the one help desk here that ignores headcount. Gorgias says its "Helpdesk scales from 50 to 5,000 tickets a month, never priced per agent." Starter is $40 a month for 50 tickets, billed monthly, and its AI Agent works on the same idea: "pay only when it resolves a conversation" (pricing).

Where Zendesk is still stronger: anything outside ecommerce. Gorgias is shaped around online stores, so a B2B SaaS team gets less from it.

Intercom

The AI-first help desk. Its Fin AI agent costs $0.99 per Fin outcome, on top of an Intercom plan's seats (pricing). We do not quote Intercom's seat prices here, because its pricing page currently shows different versions to different visitors. Check the page yourself on the day you compare.

Where Zendesk is still stronger: classic email ticketing at scale and predictable seat-only billing. For the help center and chat angle, see HelpCenter.io vs Intercom.

HubSpot Service Hub and Salesforce Service Cloud

Choose these when your customer records already live in HubSpot or Salesforce and you want tickets beside deals and contacts. Both are priced per seat inside a larger CRM, with extras that depend on the edition, so read the vendor's own pricing page for your team size. Neither is a cheaper Zendesk; they are a different bet, on one system of record.

How is AI support billed across Zendesk and its competitors?

AI billing is where these tools differ most, because most vendors now charge for the AI by what it resolves, not by seat. Here is how each pricing page describes it today:

VendorAI billing as published
ZendeskPer automated resolution: you pay only when the AI resolves a request without a human
Help Scout$0.75 per resolution, billed monthly
GorgiasPay only when the AI Agent resolves a conversation
Intercom$0.99 per Fin outcome, on top of seats
Freshdesk500 AI Agent sessions included on Growth, then $49 per 100 sessions
HelpCenter.chat (ours)Monthly credit plans from $29 per workspace; one credit per delivered standard answer, none for handoffs

Resolution pricing is fair in one direction: you do not pay for AI that fails. It also means the AI bill grows with your volume. Before you compare, estimate how many of your questions already have a written answer the AI could use. That share, not the per-resolution price, drives the total.

If you only need the help center

Plenty of teams like Zendesk's ticketing and only resent paying Suite seats for public help articles. A standalone help center lets you keep the tickets on a cheaper plan and move the articles out.

  • Document360 does not publish a price. Its page says it "prices around your specific configuration" and ends with "We quote what fits." (pricing)
  • Helpjuice starts at $249 a month for its Knowledge Base plan, which includes 30 users (pricing).
  • HelpCenter.io is ours. It charges a flat price per help center, not per support seat: Bootstrap is $29 a month billed yearly for 1 team member, Growth is $119 a month billed yearly ($149 month to month) for up to 10, and Catalyst is $179 a month billed yearly ($199 month to month) for unlimited members. Growth and Catalyst include free migration, where our team moves every article, category, and image, usually in under 7 days (free migration). AI answers are included on Catalyst and are a $29/mo add-on on Bootstrap and Growth (AI answers).

The limit, said plainly: HelpCenter.io is a help center, not a help desk. It has no ticketing of its own, so it pairs with whatever handles your email. For the side-by-side, see HelpCenter.io vs Zendesk, and for the move itself, the guide to migrating off the Zendesk help center. If you are still choosing a knowledge base, our knowledge base software roundup compares more options.

If you only need live chat

Zendesk's chat arrives with Suite Team. If chat is the piece you want, a standalone chat tool is often free for human conversations:

  • Tidio has a free plan, with its Lyro AI sold in paid conversation bundles (pricing).
  • Crisp offers a free plan and charges a "flat rate per workspace" on paid plans rather than per agent (pricing).
  • tawk.to is free, and its pricing page answers the obvious question under the heading "Why is tawk.to free?" (pricing).
  • HelpCenter.chat is ours. Human chat is free for 2 team seats and 100 new conversations a month, with a website messenger and shared inbox, and it does not expire. Its optional AI, Orelvi, starts at $29 a month per workspace and answers from your published HelpCenter.io articles, then hands over to your team (pricing).

The limit: on HelpCenter.chat's free plan, new conversations pause at 100 in a period until it resets, and Orelvi needs a connected HelpCenter.io help center before it can answer. For how chat and AI fit together, see chatbot vs live chat. If you want both of our products, bundles save 20% on each.

What do 10 agents cost on Zendesk vs its competitors?

A like-for-like view for a 10-person team that wants tickets and a public help center, using each vendor's published yearly price on 28 September 2026:

SetupMonthly cost, billed yearlyIncludes
Zendesk Suite Team, 10 agents$550Tickets, help center, chat, voice, AI agents billed per resolution
Freshdesk Growth, 10 agents$190Tickets, knowledge base, 500 AI sessions
Help Scout Standard, 10 users$250Tickets, live chat, multiple knowledge bases
Front Starter, 10 seats$250Shared inbox, ticketing, public knowledge base (10 seats is the Starter maximum)
Zendesk Support Team + HelpCenter.io Growth$190 + $119 = $309Zendesk tickets kept, help center moved to HelpCenter.io; no Zendesk chat or voice

These are list prices before add-ons, taxes, or AI usage. The last row is the "replace one piece" option: keep Zendesk's ticketing on its cheapest plan and move the help center out, which saves $241 a month against Suite Team if you do not need Zendesk's chat or voice.

How to pick a Zendesk competitor

  • Small SaaS team, mostly email: Help Scout or Freshdesk, and a standalone help center if you want more control over your docs.
  • Ecommerce store: Gorgias, since it prices by tickets instead of agents.
  • AI answers first: Intercom, or any desk above plus an AI layer billed per resolution. Compare on your own resolution rate.
  • Customer data lives in a CRM: HubSpot Service Hub or Salesforce Service Cloud.
  • Happy with Zendesk tickets, unhappy with the bill: drop to Support Team and move only the help center.
  • Tiny team or a tight budget: Zoho Desk's free edition or Help Scout's free plan for tickets, and free live chat from any of the chat tools above.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Zendesk's biggest competitor?

For a full help desk, Freshdesk is the closest like-for-like competitor: the same ticketing-plus-knowledge-base shape, with a knowledge base on its $19 Growth plan. For AI-first support, Intercom is the main rival. For ecommerce, it is Gorgias.

Which is better, Zendesk or Freshdesk?

Freshdesk is cheaper for a help desk with a knowledge base: $19 per agent a month billed annually on Growth, against $55 for Zendesk Suite Team, the first Zendesk plan with a knowledge base. Zendesk is stronger on integrations, voice, and enterprise scale.

Is there a free alternative to Zendesk?

Yes, for small teams. Zoho Desk has a free edition for 3 users and Help Scout has a free plan for 5 users. For live chat alone, Tidio, Crisp, tawk.to, and HelpCenter.chat, which we make, all have free plans.

Can I replace only the Zendesk help center?

Yes. You can keep Zendesk tickets on Support Team, which has no knowledge base, and run your help center on a standalone tool such as Document360, Helpjuice, or HelpCenter.io, which we make. Link the help center from your Zendesk contact forms so customers still reach your team.
