What Mintlify is and who it's built for

Mintlify calls itself an AI-native documentation platform built for developers, and it earns the label. Defaults are gorgeous, the API playground is first-class, every page ships as Markdown for agents, and llms.txt and an MCP server come standard. Teams like Replit, Perplexity and Lovable put their developer docs on it.

Under the hood, Mintlify is docs-as-code. Every page is an MDX file in a Git repository. Mintlify's web editor is genuinely good, with real-time collaboration and automatic saves, and it "manages Git operations for you." But Git is still the foundation: publishing writes a commit, a protected branch sends you to a new branch, a feature branch opens a pull request, and nothing goes live until it merges. Mintlify even publishes a guide to Git concepts so writers can follow along.

For engineers, that's a feature. For a support team, it's a workflow they didn't sign up for.

Where HelpCenter.io wins

Everything Mintlify gives you, minus the Git workflow

Edit in a browser. Publish. Done.

No branches to pick, no pull requests to merge, no protection rules deciding what your Publish button does. Your support lead writes the fix and it's live. That's the whole process.

Diffs anyone can read

Every article keeps its history, and our diffs are built to be easy and clear to read. You see what changed in the article itself, not in a file in a repo.

No MDX to break

Mintlify won't publish while a page has invalid MDX. On HelpCenter.io there's no markup to break: write in the editor and publish. AI agents still get clean Markdown and llms.txt.

Just as AI-ready

Every live, public help center gets its own read-only MCP server at its address plus /mcp, on every plan (ours is at self.helpcenter.io/mcp). On Growth and Catalyst, the full MCP server and API let Claude, ChatGPT or your own agent search, write, organize and publish. Plus llms.txt and Markdown for every article.

Built for customers, not just readers

Typo-tolerant search on every plan, so customers find answers even when they misspell them. The AI Widget brings your help center into your product with proactive nudges and contact options, and FAQ sections drop answers onto any page of your site with one snippet.

Beautiful out of the box, yours forever

Modern templates with dark mode, and custom themes that survive updates. Paste your website's address and the AI theming agent drafts a matching theme.

A price a support team can approve

$29, $119 or $179 a month, flat per help center. No credits per answer. Mintlify Pro is $450 a month billed annually.

Templates

Want the Mintlify look? Start with Midnight.

Midnight is our docs-style template for developer tools and APIs, with a dark look like Mintlify's. Geist and Geist Mono type, an emerald glow over a grid-lined hero, and a terminal card that shows a first API request. The docs tree sits beside every inner page, and each article has a menu to copy the page or open it in Claude or ChatGPT. It stays dark in light and dark mode.

Make it yours in the Template Customizer. Change colors, fonts and layouts, or add custom CSS, with no code to deploy and no Git. Or paste your website's address and the AI Theming Agent drafts a matching theme. Midnight is included on every plan.

The honest read

When Mintlify is the better fit

Pick Mintlify if your docs are developer and API documentation that engineers already maintain in Git, you want docs reviewed in pull requests next to code, or you need an interactive API playground. It's an excellent product for that job.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does Mintlify cost?

As of 3 Nov 2026, Starter is free (5 editor seats, no AI features), Pro is $450/month billed annually or $540/month billed monthly with 10,000 AI credits, and Enterprise is priced on request. HelpCenter.io is $29, $119 or $179 a month, flat per help center.

Do I need to know Git to use Mintlify?

Mintlify's web editor handles Git operations for you, but your content still lives in a Git repository: publishing makes commits, and depending on your branch setup it opens pull requests that need review and a merge. HelpCenter.io has no repository, so there's nothing to understand beyond Publish.

Is HelpCenter.io a good Mintlify alternative?

Yes, if your docs serve customers and are owned by support or non-engineering teams. You get a modern, AI-ready help center with an in-app widget, typo-tolerant search and clear article diffs, without the docs-as-code workflow.

Does HelpCenter.io work with AI agents like Mintlify does?

Yes. Every public help center has llms.txt, Markdown and a read-only MCP server on every plan, and Growth and Catalyst add a full read-and-write MCP server and API for Claude, ChatGPT or your own agent.

Can I move my Mintlify docs to HelpCenter.io?

Yes. Free, done-for-you migration is included on every plan.
