HelpCenter.io vs Help Scout
In Help Scout the knowledge base is one module of about eight, rationed by tier and priced by the agent. Here it is the whole product, on your own domain, at a flat price.

Read this first: HelpCenter.io is not a ticketing system
We are not a shared inbox, and we are not trying to become one. HelpCenter.io has no ticket queues, no routing rules, no SLAs, no agent workload reporting and no omnichannel conversation history. Help Scout has all of that, and it is good at it.
So if the thing keeping you up at night is answering conversations, buy Help Scout. If the thing keeping you up at night is that your customers cannot find answers on their own, keep reading, because that is the job this product was built for. A lot of teams run both: Help Scout for the inbox, HelpCenter.io for the branded public help center that keeps volume out of it.

What Help Scout is and who it's right for
Help Scout is a customer-service platform built around a shared inbox. Their own headline says it plainly: businesses that run on relationships run support on Help Scout. Conversations arrive in the Inbox, your team works them together, and the surrounding modules (Docs for a knowledge base, the Beacon widget, proactive messaging, reporting, 100+ integrations) hang off that centre of gravity. If your team lives in a queue all day, that is a genuinely good place to live.
Docs, their knowledge base, is one capability of roughly eight. It builds a public, no-code self-service help center with colour and formatting options out of the box plus CSS customization, built-in search, and controls to keep a site public, restrict visitors, or authorize specific users through their API. The Docs editor has AI writing tools including translation into 12+ languages, and Help Scout says self-service cuts email volume by about 30%. It is a capable module. It is also, structurally, a module: to get it you buy the platform, and the platform is priced by the agent.
That is the whole question. If your job to be done is "run a support organisation," Help Scout sells you the right shape of thing. If your job to be done is "publish and maintain a branded public knowledge base," you are buying an inbox platform to get one module, and paying $25, $45 or $75 per user, per month for the privilege.
How you can tell the knowledge base is a side module
Not an opinion. Four things you can check on Help Scout's own pages in about five minutes.
Their own migration tool skips it
Help Scout's official switching path runs through Import2 and brings across emails and tickets, customers, and tags. Knowledge base articles are generally not included, with Zendesk the single exception and only after contacting their team. When a platform builds a migration path and the knowledge base is the part left out, that tells you where it sits.
You are rationed help centers
One Docs site on Free, two on Standard, three on Plus, five on Pro, and $20 a month billed annually (or $24) for each one after that. The public help center is metered like an add-on. On HelpCenter.io the help center is the product you bought, on your own domain with SSL from the $29 plan.
It is one of roughly eight capabilities
The homepage leads with the Inbox, Fin-style AI answering, the Beacon widget, proactive messages, reporting and integrations. Docs sits in that list. Roadmap attention, pricing design and the marketing story all follow the inbox, because that is the product.
The price is set by agents, not by content
Your knowledge base costs whatever your agent headcount costs, because seats are the unit. A five-person team on Plus pays $225 a month before a single article is written, and customer-facing AI adds $0.75 per resolution on top.

When the help center is the product you actually need
The price stops moving when the team grows
Help Scout is $25 per user on Standard, $45 on Plus and $75 on Pro, every month, for everyone who needs access. HelpCenter.io is flat per workspace: $29, $119 or $179 a month on annual billing ($39, $149 or $199 monthly). Ten people who touch support cost $250 to $750 a month there. Here they cost nothing extra.
Customer-facing AI without a per-resolution meter
Help Scout's AI Answers is a metered add-on at $0.75 per resolution, so deflection has a running unit cost. On HelpCenter.io the AI Widget ships on every plan including Bootstrap, and grounded AI Question Answering is included on Catalyst or a $29/mo add-on ($24/mo billed annually) on Bootstrap and Growth. Your bill does not track your traffic.
You are not paying for eight modules to use one
Docs is one capability inside a suite, and its reach is capped by tier: 1 Docs site on Free, 2 on Standard, 3 on Plus, 5 on Pro, with extra sites at $20 a month billed annually or $24 a month. HelpCenter.io puts the whole product budget into the help center itself: themes and layouts built for self-service, categories, search, a custom domain with SSL on every plan.
Free, done-for-you migration on Growth and Catalyst
Send us your existing content and our team rebuilds the structure, articles and images in your new branded help center, at no cost on Growth and Catalyst, typically live in under a week. You do not retype anything. See free migration.
If you need a help desk, buy the help desk
Help Scout is a shared inbox with a knowledge base attached, and we are the other way round. If conversations are the job, and you want one vendor for the inbox, routing and SLAs, buy Help Scout. We are not a ticketing system and do not intend to become one. Many teams run both.
Flat per workspace vs per user, per month
Help Scout's price is a function of how many people you add. Ours is a function of which plan you choose.
| Plan tier |
HelpCenter.io
flat / workspace, billed annually
|
Help Scout
per user / month
|
|---|---|---|
| Free | 14-day free trial, no free tier | Free - $0 (5 users, 1 Docs site, 100 contacts/mo) |
| Entry | Bootstrap - $29/mo (1 team member, AI Widget) | Standard - $25/user/mo (up to 25 users, 2 Docs sites) |
| Mid | Growth - $119/mo (up to 10 members, AI Q&A add-on eligible) | Plus - $45/user/mo (up to 50 users, 3 Docs sites) |
| Top | Catalyst - $179/mo (unlimited members, AI Q&A included, SSO) | Pro - $75/user/mo (10 user minimum, 5 Docs sites) |
Two line items are easy to miss when you budget. First, customer-facing AI: Help Scout's AI Answers is metered at $0.75 per resolution, on top of the per-user price, after the 3-month unlimited trial that new accounts get. Second, extra help centers: Docs sites are capped at 1, 2, 3 and 5 by tier, and additional sites are $20 a month paid annually, or $24 a month.
On our side, monthly billing is $39, $149 and $199, and AI Question Answering is included on Catalyst or a $29/mo add-on ($24/mo billed annually) on Bootstrap and Growth. The AI Widget is on every plan, Bootstrap included. Run the numbers for your actual headcount and your actual deflection volume before you decide. If Help Scout comes out ahead for your shape of team, that is a fine answer.

Moving your Docs content to HelpCenter.io
One detail worth knowing before you plan the move, in either direction. Help Scout's official imports run through their partner Import2 and cover emails and tickets, customers and tags, from Zendesk, Freshdesk and Groove. Knowledge base articles are generally not part of that import, with Zendesk the single exception, and it needs their team involved first. Rules, Macros and Saved Replies do not transfer at all and get recreated by hand.
Articles are precisely what we move. On Growth and Catalyst our migration team rebuilds your structure, articles and images in your new branded help center for free, typically live in under a week. You review it, you do not rebuild it.
Other Help Scout alternatives worth considering
If neither of us is the fit, a few others depending on your job to be done: Intercom and Front if you want the same suite trade-off from a different vendor, Document360 for documentation-platform depth, HelpDocs for a lightweight standalone knowledge base, and Slite if the content is really internal. For the fuller landscape, see our roundup of the best knowledge base software in 2026, or compare the best Zendesk alternatives if you are weighing the big suites.
Frequently asked questions
Is HelpCenter.io a full Help Scout replacement?
No. HelpCenter.io is a help center, not a ticketing system or a shared inbox, and it does not try to be one. If you need omnichannel ticketing, routing, SLAs and agent workflows, Help Scout is the better product and you should buy it. Plenty of teams pair the two instead: Help Scout for conversations, HelpCenter.io for the branded public help center that stops many of those conversations from starting.
What does HelpCenter.io cost compared to Help Scout?
HelpCenter.io is flat per workspace: $29 a month on Bootstrap, $119 on Growth and $179 on Catalyst with annual billing. Help Scout is priced per user, per month: $25 on Standard, $45 on Plus and $75 on Pro. Ten people who touch support run $250 to $750 a month on Help Scout, while the HelpCenter.io price does not move when you add teammates.
Does HelpCenter.io charge per AI resolution?
No. Help Scout meters AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution, where a resolution is a conversation the AI closes without a human. On HelpCenter.io the AI Widget ships on every plan including Bootstrap, and AI Question Answering is included on Catalyst or available as a $29 a month add-on ($24 a month billed annually) on Bootstrap and Growth. There is no per-answer meter.
Can I move my knowledge base articles off Help Scout Docs?
Yes. Worth knowing before you plan the move: Help Scout's official imports run through Import2 and cover emails and tickets, customers and tags, while knowledge base articles are generally not included, with Zendesk the one exception that needs their team involved first. Articles are exactly what our migration team moves for you, free on Growth and Catalyst, structure and images included, typically live in under a week.
Does Help Scout limit how many help centers I can publish?
Yes. Docs sites are capped by tier: 1 on Free, 2 on Standard, 3 on Plus and 5 on Pro. Extra Docs sites cost $20 a month when paid annually, or $24 a month. If you run more than one brand or product line, add those site fees to the per-user cost before you compare the two.
